Romeo and Juliet Romeo vs Count Paris Essay - 818 Words

----------------- Mrs. Phillips English 9(H) 29 April 2013 The Lover of Verona versus The Ideal Husband Romeo, the lover of Verona, and Count Paris, the ideal partner in marriage, are intertwined in fate and are seemingly made opponents of love in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Romeo, son of Lord and Lady Montague, falls in love with Juliet, daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet. Due to the fact that the Montagues and Capulets still sustain an ancient feud between their households, Romeo and Juliet keep their love a secret. Unaware of their daughter’s love to Romeo, Lord and Lady Capulet make plans to wed Juliet to Count†¦show more content†¦When Friar Laurence asks if Romeo was with Rosaline, Romeo responds, â€Å"With Rosaline, my ghostly Father? No. / I have forgot that name and that name’s woe.†(2.3.48-49) He later says: Then plainly know my heart’s dear love is set On the fair daughter of rich Capulet. As mine on hers, so hers is set on mine, And all combined, save what thou must combine By holy marriage. When and where and how We met, we w ooed, and made exchange of vow I’ll tell thee as we pass, but this I pray, That thou consent to marry us today. (2.3.61-68) Romeo has completely forgotten Rosaline, a character Romeo cried and was depressed about. He instead pleads with the Friar to marry him to his newfound love, Juliet. Count Paris is also self-centered. This is shown when he talks to Lord Capulet about the wedding. Capulet says: But saying o’er what I have said before. My child is yet a stranger in the world. She hath not seen the change of fourteen years. Let two more summers wither in their pride Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride. (1.2.7-11) To this Paris responds, â€Å"Younger than she are happy mothers made†(1.2.12). This shows that he is impatient about the wedding. Even though Lord Capulet wants to wait two years, Paris tries to move the wedding day sooner, showing that he cares only about himself and not of the needs and preferences of other characters. Despite being self- centered and loving Juliet, Count Paris and Romeo have a major difference. Health Rights Within The World Health Organization Essay

HEALTH RIGHTS IN CONFLICT/DISASTER CONTEXT According to the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The above definition of health by the World Health Organization redefined the concept of health among the different stakeholders involved in safeguarding people’s right to health. Until then health was merely seen as an absence of disease. But this definition helped the world to reimagining the various dimensions of health. Thus it underscores the fact that health is directly influenced by the environmental as well as social factors such as housing, education, food and a sense of safety from physical as well as sexual violence too. Thus health effects of conflict and disasters are much beyond the mortality and morbidity figures reported. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) declares health as a fundamental human right . The right to health is considered as an inclusive right wherein its scope extends beyond the conventional concept of right to healthcare. The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights specifies those underlying crucial determinants as safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, safe food, gender equality, and healthy environment and working conditions, health related education and information, adequate nutrition as well as housing. Beloved Essay Children Example For Students

Beloved Essay Children After the abolishment of slavery, the black community became the core of African American culture and life. This was due in part by segregation and other socioeconomic factors, but also to the spiritual and social unity of each black member. The black community played a major role in Beloved, especially with their interactions witah Sethe. After Sethes escape from slavery, she traveled to Cincinnati to reunite with her children and mother-in-law, Baby Suggs. She arrived at 124, a house constantly filled with people and happiness. Where not one but two pots simmered on the stove; where the lamp burned all night long. Strangers rested while their children tried on their shoes. Messages were left there, for whoever needed them was sure to stop in one day soon. (Morrison, 87) Sethe was enveloped with love and security, while Baby Suggs, the local spiritual leader, became the driving force in the community, gathering the people together to preach self love and respect. When warm weather c ame, Baby Suggs, holy, followed by every black man, woman and child who could make it through, took her great heart to the Clearing (Morrison, 87)Twenty days after Sethes arrival, Stamp Paid brought them two huge buckets of delicious blackberries. With these Baby Suggs and Sethe decided to share the pies they would make from the berries with Ella and her husband John, and from this their generosity escalated into a full-fledged feast for all the colored people in the area. The area folks accepted the generosity, but resented the bounty of Baby Suggs and her kin. They disapproved of the uncalled-for pride displayed at 124, and were offended by Baby Suggss excess. Because of this they failed to warn Baby Suggs and Sethe that four white men on horses who were approaching. Sethe, with the help of Baby Suggs and the community, began to build a life for herself and children, but her dreams were soon shattered when the Schoolteacher came into her yard. Because of her fear of returning to slavery and her sense of hopelessness, Sethe resorted to animal brutality, ending her daughters life so as not to endure one of degradation and abuse. She acted on instinct, never thinking of the consequences and never asking for forgiveness or help. After that nothing was ever the same. 124 shut down and put up with the venom of its ghost. No more lamp all night long, or neighbors dropping by. No low conversations after supper. No watched barefoot children playing in the shoes of strangers. Baby Suggs, holy, believed she had lied. (Morrison, 89) People stayed away from 124, fearing the bad spirit and aura emanating from and inhabiting it. Everything that Baby Suggs had preached, believed, and lived had been thrown in her face and decimated, thus causing her to lose the s pirit and will to live. With the death and burial of Baby Suggs came the final insult to the community. The setting-up was held in the yard because nobody besides himself would enter 124-an injury Sethe answered with another by refusing to attend the service Reverend Pike presided over. She went instead to the gravesite, whose silence she competed with as she stood there not joining in the hymns the others sand with all their hearts. The insult spawned another by the mourners; back in the yard of 124, they ate the food they brought and did not touch Sethes, who did not touch theirs and forbade Denver to. So Baby Suggs , holy, was buried amid a regular dance of pride, fear, condemnation and spite Her outrageous claims, her self-suffiency seemed to demand it, and Stamp Paidwondered if some of the pride goeth before a fall expectationshad rubbed off on him (Morrison, 171)Sethe, after being released from jail, never looked to the community for help or sympathy, but walked arrogantly with her head held high, and in the eyes of the community, what was empathy and compassion soon turned into condemnation and disdain. The community, though not agreeing with what Sethe did, nevertheless understood her actions and reasons for them, for each and every one of them had been scarred mentally, physically, and spiritually by slavery. Each had their own

November 28, 1996 Grameenphone was offered a cellular license in Bangladesh by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. March 26, 1997 Grameenphone launched its service on the Independence Day of Bangladesh. November 5, 2006 After almost 10 years of operation, Grameenphone has over 10 million subscribers. September 20, 2007 Grameenphone announces 15 million subscribers. It established the first 24-hour Call Center, introduced value-added services such as VMS, SMS, fax and data transmission services, international roaming service, WAP, SMS-based push-pull services, EDGE, personal ring back tone and many other products and services. The entire Grameenphone network is also EDGE/GPRS enabled, allowing access to high-speed Internet and data services from anywhere within the coverage area. There are currently nearly 3 million EDGE/GPRS users in the Grameenphone network. In addition, the Village Phone Program, also started in 1997, provides a good income-earning opportunity to more than 210,000 mostly women Village Phone operators living in rural areas. The Village Phone Program is a unique initiative to provide universal access to telecommunications service in remote, rural areas. So there have a little bit concern for the Aktel to improve their service quality as well as their market position. So it is high time to come forward with the comprehensive movement to achieve the expected position in the current market. [pic][pic]

Washington Irving Essays - The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, Free Essays

Washington Irving Essays - The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, Free Essays Washington Irving Washington Irving was the first native American to succeed as a professional writer. He remains important as a pioneer in American humor and the development of the short story. Irving was greatly admired and imitated in the 19th century. Toward the end of his career, his reputation declined due to the sentimentality and excessive gentility of much of his work ("Irving" 479). Washington Irving's time spent in the Hudson Valley and abroad contributed to his writing of The Devil and Tom Walker, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and Rip Van Winkle. Irving was born in New York City on April 3, 1783, the youngest of eleven children in a merchant family. Unlike his brothers, Irving did not attend nearby Columbia College, instead he was apprenticed in 1801 to a lawyer. In 1806, he passed the bar examination, but remained financially dependent on his family until the publication of The Sketch Book. In the meantime, Irving did odd jobs for the family as agent and lobbyist. It seems like he worked as little as possible, and for years pursued an amateur or semiprofessional interest in literature ("Irving" 479). In his free time, he read avidly and wandered when he could in the misty, rolling Hudson River valley, an area steeped in local folklore and legend that would serve as an inspiration for his later writings. ("Washington Irving" DISC) At nineteen, Mr. Irving began writing satirical letters under the pseudonym "Jonathan Oldstyle." He wrote to a newspaper owned by his brother Peter, named the New York Morning Chronicle. His first book, Salmagundi, was a collaboration with another brother, William and their friend James Kirke Paulding. This book satirized early New York theater and poked fun at the political, social, and cultural life of the city. Washington Irving's second book, A History of New York, from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, is narrated by the fictitious Diedrich Knickerbocker. This book is a comical, deliberately inaccurate account of New York's Dutch colonization ("Washington Irving" DISC). Knickerbocker History and the almost thirty parts of Irving's next critically acclaimed book, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., show that his roots in New York and travels abroad gave him the basis for these works. The lively story of "The Devil and Tom Walker" is the story of Tom Walker, his termagant wife, and their separate confrontations with the devil. The New England folk tale is told with very little addition says Sara Rodes: Irving could have heard this tale in New York as well as in new England, for the general picture of the sharp "Yankee" represented by Tom Walker fitted well into the New Yorkers' idea of the new England character. Irving also uses the folk tradition as a base for his own imaginings rather than keeping close to the folk versions for the whole story. However, he always keeps much of the true folk spirit in his stories no matter how much he may add and romanticize. He often eliminates the roughness of the folk version but his folk lore is authentic and his use of it legitimate. (248) In this folk tale we see again that Mr. Irving has used his background to basically retell a story that he might have heard as a child. Also in, "The Devil and Tom Walker," which, despite its wildly improbable plot, foreshadows the best of Hawthornes's fictional exposure of Yankee shrewdness and Puritan hypocrisy (Ferguson 391). The Sketch Book, also contains the classic tale of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." This is the story of Ichabod Crane, which is from Hebrew meaning "inglorious," or literally, "without honor" (Bone 4). Ichabod's encounter with the Headless Horseman is the dramatic climax of the story. In the folktale of German origin Irving has once again transplanted the story to take places in the Hudson Valley of New York and achieved something more than the routine tale of suspense or the bizarre anecdote ("Irving" 480). His descriptions of Sleepy Hollow and the people were so realistic and homey that old timers of the lower Hudson River claimed to have known Brom Bones himself (Rodes 248). ". . . Irving is thoroughly capable of creating pure fiction form

The life of William shakespeare Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The life of William shakespeare - Research Paper Example Of the five siblings, William had two sisters and three brothers. Edmund Shakespeare, the last born in the Shakespeare family was born when William was in his teenage years, and that’s when he lost one of his sisters. John Shakespeare later became the mayor of the town in which William was born. Shakespeare never had an extensive education life. At the age of six or seven, William Shakespeare attended the King’s new school in Stratford (a school that taught children of prominent citizens) where he leant grammar and got the chance of sharpening his writing skills which laid down the foundation of his career in theater. In his secondary, he studied Latin, literature, rhetoric, logic, and ethics. In his work, there is evidence of Roman comedy, classical mythology and ancient history. This is believed to be his only formal education as there is no evidence to suggest he ever received university training. William might have been withdrawn from the school of grammar due to the increased poverty of his father at the age of thirteen. At that time, his father was a butcher, and William joined him in that business for some time. The business of John Shakespeare had gone from bad to worse, and at the time, William Shakespeare was eighteen, his father was deprived of his mayorship. This happened on 6th of September 1586. Not much is known about the life of William Shakespeare in his youth, but it is evident that at the age of eighteen, he got married to a farmer’s daughter known as Anne Hathaway who was eight years older than him. They married when Anne had William’s pregnancy and she gave birth six months later. It is believed that Shakespeare was forced into marriage by the Hathaway family since he wanted to marry one Anne Whateley who was already married to Wm Shaxpere and that he had previously impregnated Anne Hathaway. William Shakespeare never showed affection to his wife. This is evident because in his first draft of his will,
